How it works

The programme is open to

• Young adults between the ages of 18 and 25,
• Students who have just completed their secondary education and who want a taste of a vocation which interests them before applying to university or college.
• Graduates or those in university or college education.
• Those looking develop their skills and experience within a given vocation, engage in social work, etc.

NGE involves unpaid vocational placements within the applicant's career plans and aspirations, and of course aspects of cultural understanding and tourism during their time abroad.

NGE can vary in length, between 3 weeks and a maximum of 3 months. Candidates can depart any time of year depending on agreement with host Rotary club. An individual programme will be agreed with the host club who will also involve the student in their social and other activities.

Hosting is usually by designated host families but the vocational element, for example in a care home, may require residence on the premises. You, or your family, may be requested to host a student from abroad.

NGE participants will be allocated a Rotarian mentor, or counsellor, from their host Rotary club to assist them with arrangements prior to departure and any problems or concerns during their time abroad.  

Because this element of the Youth Exchange programme is relatively new not all countries who offer other exchange opportunities take part in the NGE programme, but the number of countries is increasing rapidly.
